Asia accounts for 54 per cent of the world’s unemployed youth population, and in a number of countries, the youth unemployment level is 3 to 4 times higher than non-youth unemployment. With jobs drying up both in the private and government sectors, the focus has turned to self-employment.  However, the potential of self-employment is currently limited because it is driven by subsistence, rather than enterprise. 

Against this backdrop, there is a growing consensus about the need to identify practical and effective strategies that will help create an entrepreneurial culture among youth -- a culture that will enhance national wealth and create more jobs. Across the world and Asia, a number of stakeholders are either actively involved or actively interested in entrepreneurship. They include: government organisations, development banks, agencies and other financial Institutions, education institutions, the business community, and venture capitalists.

There is a need to get these stakeholders actively involved in supporting young entrepreneurs to start up their businesses and move micro-entrepreneurs up the value chain. It is also important to inculcate a belief that entrepreneur assistance is not just about funding. It is a serious commitment to promote and create youth entrepreneurship. This is exactly what BYST is lobbying for.
