Nov 23, 2011

Startup Weekend is hosting an online Global Startup Battle designed to foster friendly competition and community awareness among the global Startup Weekend community. Forty-eight winning teams from Startup Weekend events that took place Nov. 11-14, 2011 and Nov. 18-20, 2011, have the chance to compete to become the ultimate Global Startup Battle winner. The public is invited to vote on the startup they want to win “the battle.” (voting deadline is Nov. 28)

More than 60 communities spread over five continents held Startup Weekends over these two weekends as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. In total, more than 4,500 attendees, mentors, speakers and judges worked on startup ideas during these events, with thousands of ideas pitched and hundreds of teams formed.

Some ideas include:

  • Sushimee, Denver, Colo. – Sushi-shaped candies, presented by a 10 year old!
  • EwAwesome, Seattle, Wash. – Microsoft Kinect-based game featuring the voice of Sir Mix-A-Lot
  • MySollars, Geneva – A social gaming platform to compensate people for their carbon emissions
  • Awesome Controller, Indianapolis, Ind. – Allows you to play your old game consoles with modern controllers like the Playstation Dual Shock controller and the Nintendo Wiimote
  • EduKoala, Warsaw – An Android application that asks you to learn a new foreign language word before unlocking your Android phone

The Global Startup Weekend Champion will win:

  • A table at the Startup Pavillion at Demo Asia in Singapore in February 2012, with an opportunity to present on stage at Demo Asia based on an audience vote. This prize is worth more than $7,000, and will give the Global Startup Weekend Champion a chance to show off their startup to investors and the media on a world stage. (demo.asia/2012)
  • A table in the Launch Pad at the Launch Conference in San Francisco in March 2012, with an opportunity to present on stage at Launch based on an audience vote. This prize is worth more than $3,000, and will give the Global Startup Weekend Champion exposure in front of some of the most influential investors in Silicon Valley. (conference.launch.is)
  • 40 hours of web design services from Creative Design Agency BTrax, worth more than $6,500
  • A PR launch package
  • $5,000 legal package from Cooley LLP

Voting is open to the global Startup Weekend community and beyond starting today and ends at 11 p.m. PST on Nov. 28, 2011. Anyone can vote for a favorite startup by going to the Startup Weekend Facebook fan page facebook.com/startupweekend, and clicking on the “Contests” tab on the left-hand side.
